PGA Championship: Kenny Perry Might Not Play!
Posted by: | CommentsBrian Hewitt reported on The Golf Channel.com yesterday that Kenny Perry may not be able to play the PGA Championship because of an eye injury.
Perry scratched the cornea in one of his eyes while removing a contact lens on Tuesday.
A steroid medication has been prescribed by doctors, but yesterday Perry said that he wouldn’t be sure until Thursday if he’d be able to play.
Perry told GolfChannel.com, “It’s killing me right now, but I think I’ll be fine tomorrow.” “It’s kind of a bummer.”
A bummer is right! Kenny Perry was a favorite going into the PGA Championship, and the only player in position to overtake Tiger Wood’s #1 ranking in Fed-Ex Cup points. He would only need to post a 3rd in the tournament to become #1 ranked.
Perry hasn’t played in a major championship all year. He didn’t qualify for the Masters, and skipped the U.S. Open and the British Open in order to secure his spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team.
Kenny said that one doctor advised him to not wear contacts for at least a week. The problem is that he can’t play with glasses because of problems with depth perception. And he can’t play without glasses or contact lenses, “I just don’t see very well”.
As Brian Hewitt points out, the champions of all three majors this year all won while contending with physical injuries; Trevor Immelman had a benign tumor removed prior to winning the Masters, Tiger Wood’s won the U.S. Open on a bad knee, and Padrag Harrington won the British Open with a bad wrist injury.
Hey Kenny! This could be a good sign!
PGA Golf: “Everybody misses him” Tim Finchem on Tiger Woods
Posted by: | CommentsAccording to a report from Associated Press, Tim Finchem, PGA Tour commissioner had his first meeting with Tiger Woods since his knee surgery. The two were together at Congressional Country Club.
Finchem reported that Tiger has lost about 12 or 13 pounds and walks with a slight limp. “He looks kind of thin.”
When Finchem was asked if he told Tiger how much he missed him, he responded with, “No, I said we missed him – the collective enterprise.” “Everybody misses him.”
Finchem said that although he doesn’t know when Tiger will return to the PGA he does know how he will return. “There’s no doubt in my mind he’ll be the same Tiger he’s been.”
Doctors have set a minimum of six months for Tiger’s return. He has begun rehab and Finchem reported that Tiger’s excited about that since he’s been bored to death.

PGA Golf: Greg Norman, No Thanks…PGA Championship
Posted by: | CommentsGreg Norman has declined the PGA of America’s invitation to play the final “Major” of the season, the PGA Championship. He stated that he has decided to “stick to a previous commitment instead of competing in a major championship for the fourth consecutive week”.
Norman was offered the exemption following the British Open. At the Open, Norman held worldwide attention as he held a 54 hole lead in the championship and appeared to be on his way to making golf history as the oldest winner of the British Open Championship. Since then he’s tied for 5th in the Senior British Open, and will play this week in the U.S. Senior Open.
Pre Tiger Woods, Greg Norman was number one on the PGA money list and was consistently the golfer to watch in every tournament he played. Until the British Open, he’s been pretty much absent from the PGA and in his own words doesn’t practice and plays more tennis than golf.
With Tiger Woods out of action, many feared that interest in the PGA would decrease. The return of Greg Norman, playing great golf, sparked a new and unexpected interest, and the timing couldn’t have been better. Imagine Greg Norman tied for the lead going into the 18th in the final round of the PGA Championship. Ok I’m dreaming, but you must admit it would be exciting.
On his website, Norman said, “While I truly appreciate the PGA extending me an exemption for this year’s PGA Championship, I have elected to decline in favor of adhering to the professional and personal commitments I made prior to the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.”
“I wish the PGA and Oakland Hills all the very best for what I’m sure will be a great week for golf.”
Greg has also been invited to play the Masters next year since he finished in the top four at the British Open. He hasn’t made a decision on that as yet.
